Jasmin Paris Scores Big Win at Spine Race

After 83 hours, 12 minutes, and 23 seconds in the harsh winds and cold of the Pennine trail, Britain’s Jasmin Paris has made MONTANE Spine Race history. Her performance not only makes her the first woman to win the 268-mile race outright, but also shatters Eoin Keith’s previous course record of 95:17 by over 12 hours (the previous women’s record was 109:54).

Between start and finish, Paris rested for only seven hours, sleeping for three, fighting off exhaustion, hallucinations, and a serious challenge from 2013 Spine Race Winner Eugeni Roselló Solé to take the victory. The 35-year-old veterinarian rose to prominence in the running community after a series of high profile wins that began at the 2015 British Fell Running Championship.

She also garnered considerable attention for a candid photograph, taken by Alexis Berg, which showed Paris breast-feeding her daughter in the moments after a race. The picture has made Paris something of an accidental advocate for public breast-feeding, but this extraordinary victory should put the attention back where it belongs: on her abilities as one of the world’s foremost endurance runners.

After giving Paris an excellent challenge for most of the race, Eugeni Roselló Solé was forced to resign from sleep deprivation only 6km from the finish. This left former course record holder Eoin Keith of Ireland to finish 2nd overall with a time of 98:18:23, with Britain’s own John Knapp coming close behind him at 102:19:23. Keith’s performance comes as a welcome sign of recovery to his supporters, after he cracked a collarbone under the brutal conditions of the 2018 Barkley Marathons, where no runner completed the course.
