The IRUN4ULTRA Ambassadors

For a number of years, Linda Sanders has recruited an impressive lineup of IRUN4ULTRA Ambassadors who willingly spread awareness about causes that are dear to her heart. They participate in ultramarathons around the world and champion Sanders’ mission and vision for a better world. Crucial to the success of her awareness programs, the Ambassadors have helped in successfully reaching a broad audience that supports Sanders’ campaigns, are taste makers for her target audience, and provide a face to IRUN4ULTRA.

When Ambassadors tweet, pin, post or share things on social media, people listen engage, and create dialogue. They are talented influencers who cultivate relationships and embrace others of like mind. The networks in which they thrive are made up of those that want to be part of something greater, whether it be for a good cause or as a result of having had a memorable experience.

What is an Ultramarathon?

The Urban Dictionary defines an ultramarathon as an insanely bad-ass long run that tests the mental toughness of the world’s finest athletes; a supreme test of athletic prowess; the hardest thing a human can do.

Any organized footrace that extends longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometers (or 26,219 miles) is considered to be an ultra distance or ultramarathon. While there is no limit, ultra races typically begin at 50 kilometers and can extend to 100 or 100+ miles.

The New York Times calls the annual Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-mile race “the Mount Everest of ultramarathons.” Considered the world’s longest certified footrace, athletes are able to test themselves in a format unlike any other ultramarathon event. In order to reach 3100 miles, they must average 59.6 miles per day for 52 straight days…

Whether on trails, roads, or tracks, ultramarathons can be out and back (paralleling Canada’s Niagara 100K), point-to-point (such as South Africa’s Comrades Marathon), or conducted on loop courses (similar to the one-mile look in New York that Sri Chinmoy runners circle 1300 times).

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) officially recognized the 100-kilometer race, which originated with the first modern Olympics in 1896, as a sport. Since that time, the 100 kilometer event has replaced the marathon as the longest running distance recognized by the world athletics governing body as an official world record event and is now held annually by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and sponsored by the IAAF.
